SEO analytics platform, Ahrefs, has acquired Detailed.com and the Detailed SEO Extension, bringing a widely-read long-form SEO publisher, its popular SEO auditing tool, and its half a million-strong userbase under the Ahrefs banner. As part of the deal, Detailed founder, Glen Allsopp, will join the Ahrefs team full-time to work on marketing strategy, research, and product development.
The acquisition represents Ahrefs’ latest move to expand its SEO content and toolset as it continues to compete with its biggest industry rival, SEMRush, for market dominance in the SEO analytics space.
Strategic Acquisition Details
The deal covers the Detailed.com website, its popular browser extension, and several smaller domains like SEOblueprint.com. Launched in 2020, Detailed.com has built a very strong reputation for long-form, data-driven SEO research and expert insights, with close to a million unique visitors visiting the site in the past year according to Matt G. Southern at Search Engine Journal.
The popular Detailed SEO extension, which has over 450,000 users on the Chrome browser alone, is also included in the acquisition. The extension streamlines page-level analysis that SEO professionals perform during audits and technical reviews, enabling them to analyse title tags and other meta tags, heading structure, robots directives, and schema markup in a single interface.
Detailed.com Founder
Glen Allsopp, Founder of Detailed.com, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to scale his work under the Ahrefs banner:
“If you follow me you’ll know I’m obsessed with all things strategy and research in this space – and more importantly, doing the work – so to get to do that on a much bigger scale is genuinely a dream of mine… My focus now is on product and tool ideas, research reports, marketing insights and everything actionable we can share to help grow your business.”
Continuity for Users
The acquisition ensures continuity for existing users, with all current functionality remaining free. The extension will retain the Detailed SEO Extension name, whilst Detailed will operate under the designation “Detailed, an Ahrefs brand.” Users require no action, with updates continuing as normal through existing Chrome and Firefox extensions.
Allsopp explained:
“Detailed will remain a separate brand and I’ll continue to personally update relevant projects there. The Detailed SEO Extension and all current features will remain free. In five years it has grown to 450,000+ weekly users, which I’m incredibly grateful for. We’ll add new features at some point, while keeping in place what’s already there.”
Competition
This acquisition is reminiscent of SEMRush’s acquisition of Backlinko back in January 2022. SEMRush is Ahrefs’ biggest competitor, and the two platforms are continuing to wrestle for market share. The move to acquire established SEO content brands and their audiences represents a strategic approach to building market presence beyond core toolsets.
The Detailed acquisition adds value to Ahrefs’ portfolio through both its highly popular browser extension and its research-driven content brand.
Terms Not Disclosed
Financial terms for the Detailed.com acquisition weren’t disclosed, but for context Brian Dean previously confirmed that SEMRush paid $5 million to acquire Backlinko in 2022.
The addition of Allsopp’s expertise in marketing strategy and research, combined with Detailed’s established user base, strengthens Ahrefs’ position in the insanely competitive SEO tools market.
The acquisition demonstrates how major SEO platforms are increasingly looking beyond their core toolsets to build comprehensive brand assets that include content, community, and specialised utilities that support SEO practitioners’ daily workflows.
