London-based AI Startup, Plumerai, Raises $8.7 Million Series A to Scale ‘Tiny AI’ for Camera Technology

London-based AI developer Plumerai has secured $8.7 million in Series A funding to expand its “Tiny AI” technology for cameras, bringing the company’s total funding to over $17 million. The round was led by new investors Partech and OTB Ventures, with support from Acclimate Ventures and existing investors including iPod creator Tony Fadell and Arm founder Dr Hermann Hauser.

The funding comes as Plumerai’s on-device AI technology gains traction in the smart camera market, addressing growing privacy concerns and cloud infrastructure costs that have plagued traditional camera AI solutions.

Revolutionary On-Device AI Approach

Plumerai, established in 2017, has developed what it terms “Tiny AI” – compact AI models that run directly on camera hardware rather than requiring cloud processing. The technology enables features including People, Vehicle, Animal & Package Detection, Familiar Face & Stranger Identification, and Multi-Camera People Tracking, all processed locally on inexpensive, off-the-shelf chips.

Roeland Nusselder, Founder and CEO of Plumerai, explained the significance of the company’s approach:

“We are at an exciting point in time where powerful Vision LLMs are now both accurate and cost-efficient enough to open up valuable new use cases, thanks to our combination of on-device Tiny AI with cloud-based Vision LLMs. We’re going to make it possible for everyone to have their own AI security guard and assistant that never gets distracted, so they feel safer and calmer than ever before. It will warn you about a stranger in your backyard, a leaking water pipe, or simply help you find your keys.”

The company’s technology already runs on millions of cameras and offers processing speeds of 0.7 seconds for notifications, compared to 2-10 seconds for average smart cameras.

Industry Validation and Strategic Partnerships

Plumerai has secured significant industry validation through its partnership with Chamberlain Group, the Illinois-based parent company of myQ and LiftMaster brands. The partnership integrates Plumerai’s AI technology into Chamberlain’s smart camera lineup, beginning with outdoor cameras.

Jishnu Kinwar, VP Advanced Products at Chamberlain Group, highlighted the benefits of the integration:

“Integrating Plumerai’s Tiny AI into our smart camera lineup has allowed us to offer advanced AI features on affordable, low-power devices. This enables us to provide our customers with smarter, more efficient products that deliver high performance without the need for cloud processing.”

High-Profile Backing and Market Disruption

The company has attracted backing from technology luminaries who see significant potential in its edge AI approach. Tony Fadell, founder of Nest and principal at Build Collective, became an early investor after experiencing firsthand the challenges of cloud-based camera processing during his time at Nest.

Tony Fadell, Nest Founder and Build Collective Principal, described Plumerai’s market position:

“Plumerai’s Tiny AI isn’t just an incremental advance – it’s a massive market disruption. While Large Language Models capture headlines, Plumerai is getting commercial traction with its new smaller-is-smarter AI model. Their Tiny AI is faster, cheaper, more accurate, and doesn’t require armies of developers harnessing vast data centres.”

Hermann Hauser, Founder of Arm, emphasized the technology’s broader implications:

“Plumerai’s technology gives companies a significant edge in a competitive market, proving that efficient, on-device AI is the future of smart home security. It’s a perfect showcase for Tiny AI’s strengths – privacy, real-time processing, and energy efficiency.”

Advanced Vision LLM Features

Alongside the funding announcement, Plumerai unveiled new Vision LLM-powered features that combine its on-device processing with cloud-based large language models for enhanced capabilities:

  • AI Video Search: Enables users to search camera video history using natural language queries, such as “person peering through a car window”
  • AI Captions: Provides detailed descriptions of video events, enabling rich notifications like “A delivery driver rang your doorbell, placed the package on the ground, and left again”

Benchmarks performed by customers demonstrate that Plumerai’s AI Video Search achieves greater accuracy than cloud-only solutions such as Amazon Nova and Google Gemini, whilst delivering cloud costs up to 135 times lower.

Investor Confidence in Edge AI Future

The investment round reflects growing confidence in edge AI processing capabilities. Reza Malekzadeh, General Partner at Partech, outlined the market opportunity:

“There are many companies building great products but they struggle to add powerful AI features to their devices. Plumerai enables them to do this, move faster to market, with high-quality AI features, and lower development costs. They are on track towards a future where trillions of intelligent edge devices are equipped with their AI.”

Marcin Hejka, Managing Partner at OTB Ventures, highlighted the company’s technical performance:

“We are particularly impressed by the strength of Plumerai’s technology and product, which has clearly outperformed in every technical evaluation performed by customers. Since customers can use simple over-the-air software updates to activate Plumerai’s AI on devices that are already in the field, Plumerai has been able to scale up quickly with rapid ARR growth as a result.”

Market Expansion and Future Growth

Initially focused on home security cameras, Plumerai is rapidly expanding into Enterprise Security and Retail applications. The company’s technology addresses key market challenges including privacy concerns, bandwidth limitations, and the rising costs associated with cloud-based AI processing.

The funding will drive Plumerai’s ambition to enable what it describes as “trillions of intelligent devices,” a vision now accelerated by its new Vision LLM features. The company’s ability to activate AI capabilities on existing devices through over-the-air updates provides a significant competitive advantage in rapidly scaling its technology deployment.

Plumerai’s approach represents a fundamental shift from the industry trend towards larger, more resource-intensive AI models, instead focusing on efficient, privacy-preserving edge processing that can operate on battery-powered devices without compromising performance or accuracy.
